GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of September 6, 2008 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order and Pres. Vinny Raso led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo then led the group in the prayer. Pres. Raso offered a prayer and then led the group in a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill and our servicemen.
Sec. Bill Poleri reported that on the backside of the minutes is the complete story he wrote about the senior shut-ins luncheon for Villa Scalabrini newsletter, which omitted the paragraph about Chairman Jimmy D’Arrigo and all the work he did. Poleri asked for a big hand for D’Arrigo, which he received. Rocco Telese motioned to accept the minutes for the Aug. 16th meeting. Vinny Oliver seconded it. The motion passed. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case).
Poleri said that elections are Oct. 18. All posts are open and nominations would be taken at the next meeting.
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the Aug. 16th meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 30; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $420. Incomes were 50/50, $31, and Dues, $5. Expenses were $169 for postage and $78 for picnic reservations. The balance is $1894.96. Telesei motioned to accept. D’Arrigo seconded it. The motion passed.
OLD BUSINESS: Treas. di Milo urged members to wear their badges and asked about getting new ones. John Murgo said that a committee is working on a design for badges. He motioned that the subject be tabled to a future meeting. Len Indelicato seconded it. The motion passed.
Pres. Raso asked for volunteers to man the Club’s booth during the San Gennaro’s Festival, which is being held Sept. 26- 28 at Highland and Hollywood. Parking will be available at Kodak Theater Lot. The first four hours are free. He explained that by having the booth the club can raise money for our charities and pickup new members. Murgo added that we need 15 or 20 guys to man the booth for a few hours at a time. John Antonucci urged younger members to get involved with the club activities. Also volunteers are needed to help with the picnic scheduled for Oct. 26.
NEW BUSINESS; Senior Shut-ins Luncheon Chairman D’Arrigo asked what date the club wants to hold the next luncheon so he can reserve the church hall. Sec. Poleri suggested that it be held in late summer like the last one and suggested that D’Arrigo try to get it for the second or fourth Saturday in August so it doesn’t interfere with the regular meeting dates. If not get whatever date is available, Poleri added.
Indelicato asked what the members think about going on a three-day cruise to Mexico. He was asked to get more information and report back to the club. He agreed.
Frank DeSimone donated $20 of his 50/50 winnings back to the club.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: John Oliva reminded members that Brother Larry Ottina’s “Pretervisualization Exhibit,” where abstract expressionism meets light and space, opens tonight. The show is held upstairs at The Market Gallery, 1057 South San Pedro St. Reception is from 6 to 10 p.m.
Pres Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Sept. 20th at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Oct. 4th meeting.
Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
