GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of November 4, 2006 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Vice Pres. Vinney Carbo led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo led the group in prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Tom Ray, who has terminal cancer, and our servicemen.
Dr. Joseph Turcillo motioned to accept the Oct. 21st minutes. Steve Loyacano seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case).
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the Oct. 21st meeting. Members attending luncheon were 27; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $378; 50/50 income, $32; Rocco Telese’s 50/50 winning donation, $33; Carmine Marinelli’s Donation for next year banner at San Gennero, $30, and Dues, $210. Picnic income, $210; expenses, $104.01, and net gain, $105.99. The balance is $3318.62. Marinelli motioned to accept. D’Arrigo seconded it. The motion carried.
Treas. di Milo asked the club to give a big thanks to Vito Giovannelli who not only donated the sausages, peppers and chicken but also prepared it along with his son, Billy and others in his family. Giovannelli received a big hand. di Milo also thanked Vito’s Aunt Rose for her Italian pastries and Carolyn Poleri for her dip, salad and cookies she donated. He reported that only cost was the park fee, rolls from Ralph’s and a few dry goods from Smart and Final, resulting in a profit for the big time.
Treas. di Milo reminded all that the $35 dues are due now.
NEW BUSINESS: The subject of attending Giovannelli’s Sinatra Room for an Italian Night featuring Tony Gallo Group was discussed. Giovannelli said that Gallo is a big name in Jazz and he occasionally performs at the Sinatra Room playing Jazz and Italian music. Although Gallo performed there for free because he is a great friend of Giovannelli, he still has to pay the other band members. Indelicato thought that we should go as a group. Sec. Bill Poleri suggested that those planning to go to give their names to di Milo and then go from there. If there were 40 reservations, Giovannelli said he would be willing to open on Monday night, thus allowing the club to have a private party. Indelicato asked Giovannelli to pick out a Monday night and we will shoot for that date. Dr. Turcillo urged members to patronize Giovannelli’s Casa de Pizza restaurant.
John Antonucci brought in a copy of one of Al Hirshfield’s cartoons featuring mostly Italian American performers. He offered it to the club to make copies for who ever may want one. Vinney Carbo volunteered to make copies but warned that they can’t be sold because of its copyright.
OLD BUSINESS: Sec. Poleri brought up the members’ behavior at the meeting. At the last meeting he spoke of certain members continual use of curse words. Today he pointed out that an incident that almost led to a fight was a big no no. Leo Matanga emphasized that the members should behave themselves. “This is not a rough house, it’s a club.” Poleri added that a potential member left the moment that the fight was about to take place. Thanks to Chaplain D’Arrigo who stepped between the two adversaries the fight never happened. Michael An’gileo suggested that when a potential member attends a meeting we should make him feel at home. Poleri said he spent more than 10 minutes with him and Indelicato had spent more than 15 minutes with him.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Comedienne Tracy Esposito promoted her play, “Chicken Parmigina,” to the club. It will be performed two consecutive Wednesday, Nov. 15th & Dec. 6th at 7:30 p.m. at Stella Adler Theater, 6773 Hollywood Blvd-Highland with validation parking at Hollywood Highland complex. The price is $15 with $5 off with the cards she passed out.
Vice Pres. Vinney Carbo then adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on Nov. 18th at Vitello’s Restaurant followed by the Dec 2nd meeting.
