GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of May 7, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso invited Holzer to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Frank Valentino who is back in St. Joseph’s Hospital, and those in the services. Pres. Raso gave the prayer of thanks.
Duke Sella motioned to accept the Apr. 16th minutes. Holzer seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case).
Treas. Tony di Milo couldn’t read the financial report from April 16th meeting because being in the process of moving he couldn’t fine his record. He did report the balance at $3448.74.
di Milo said that this was the lowest attendance meeting at 20 members. Sec. Bill Poleri incorrectly corrected him, saying the lowest attendance was 18. (Note: Poleri checked the records. The lowest attendance was at 17 and took place on Oct. 18, 2003.
Treas. di Milo reported that he is still negotiating for the Man-of-the-Year Dinner.
OLD BUSINESS: Pres. Raso showed a large picture of his grandparents in the opening discussion of last meeting tabled item about entering the photos of our grandfathers on our web sight. He started to give the history of his grandparents, proudly telling how they came over here and made a beautiful life for themselves and their family. Sec. Poleri asked him if he would postpone the history of until such time it has been put in writing so Poleri could enter it correctly into the minutes. Poleri explained that he wouldn’t be able to do an exacting job of recording if he must rely on his own notes.
Micheal (Vanoff) Gileo said that our grandfathers were classic old-world gentlemen, who enjoyed, protected and labored for their families. John Murgo commented that our grandfather’s type is no longer around. Gileo added that our grandfathers were strong gentlemen and we should honor them by putting their pictures on our web sight. Lee Papppas, G.O.I.I.A. computer guru, reported that putting photos of our grandparents on the web site is no problem. The easiest way, he said, is for members to scan the photo and then email it to the site. When asked about having a public web sight, he explained that there would be a monthly fee of $10. He explained that the sight G.O.I.I.A. uses now is a sub web sight of his own web sight.
Sec. Poleri reminded members that the reason why we set up the sight the way we did was because members didn’t want their email and/or home addresses known to the public. But, he added, a public sight would increase membership. Murgo asked why can’t we have a public web sight but limiting the personal information. “We sure can use some more members with this turnout.” Sec. Poleri argued against the public sight because if the membership increases too much we will have to hire someone to do the proper paper work. Murgo said we could close the membership at 100 like we did in the beginning when we met at Mike Policare’s house. Poleri reported that the membership is at 92 right now and that is about the right size.
Getting back to our grandfathers, Frank La Marca said that he liked the idea of giving our grandfather’s background, like the way Pres. Raso did earlier, but we do need to work out the mechanics of doing it. Poleri said he doesn’t mind doing the work of recording the bios if he could be sure he did it with accuracy.
Sella said that there are two discussions before the members. For the first one, he motioned that we initiate putting our grandfathers pictures on our present private sight and for the second item of acquiring a public web sight, we table to a future meeting. Jimmy D’Arrigo seconded motions. They both passed.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on May 21st at Villa Sorrento followed by the June 4th meeting.
