GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of May 20, 2006 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Frank Valentino, Steve (Lord) Loyacano and Jimmy D’Arrigo’s wife who is in the hospital and those in the services. (Note: Frank Valentino died May 22. See below.)
Holzer motioned to accept the May 6th minutes. Ronnie La Barbera seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web site is now: www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case). Poleri reminded that there would be no meeting the first Saturday of July due to the Fourth of July Holiday.
Treas. di Milo read the financial report for the May 6th meeting. Incomes from the Luncheon were $312 and non-eaters, $6 for a total of $318. Luncheon expenses were $309 and gratuity, $27 for a gain of $9. Other incomes were Dues, $17.50, and 50/50, $37. Other expenses were postage, $48, and hospital basket for Steve Loyacano, $50. The balance is $2449.50. Loyacano motioned to accept. Jimmy D’Arrigo seconded the motion.
Treas. di Milo passed out tickets to the picnic for the Ahead With Horses, a nonprofit organization that builds up handicapped children’s self esteem by having them ride horses. The children who attend our annual Handicapped Children Christmas Party are from Ahead With Horses.
OLD BUSINESS: According to Committee member Jimmy D’Arrigo, this year’s Luncheon for Senior Shut-Ins will be held July 15. He said more details would be available at the next meeting. Leo Matranga, another committee member, said it is a wonderful thing we do and if any member knows an elderly person who doesn’t get out much to bring them.
He also asked members to donate $30 to help defray the cost of the luncheon. Realizing all can’t afford $30, he explained that an envelope would be passed out so members can make whatever donation they can afford without be embarrassed. John Murgo disagreed, saying that the membership shouldn’t have to give a donation. Matranga explained that members don’t have to make a donation, that’s why we have the envelopes. Loyacano said he was sorry he didn’t bring his wife last year, it’s a very satisfying event. Pres. Raso reported that the musical entertainment at this year’s luncheon would have a saxophone player. Besides him and his wife, Karen, member and saxophonist Vince Cobro would join the group.
Ronnie La Barbera brought John Vitanza, a friend who is the shirt business. Vitanza explained what kind of shirts his firm has and asked which logo do we want on the shirts. G.O.I.I.A. has two logos, a large round one, like our pins, and a semi circle one, which is found on our shirts. Vitanza advised against 100% cotton because it fades, unless you buy the very expensive cotton shirt. He said that a mixture of cotton and polyester is much better. Dax Litto said we should pick one logo and go with that. No definition decision was made.
Pres. Raso described the certificate the club awarded his niece, Janet Raso Ianessa, for her work with autistic children the past 34 years. Medford MA honored her as the citizen of the year for her dedication to these children. Pres. Raso felt that since the club is involved with handicapped children by holding its annual Christmas Party, the club should issue a proclamation to his niece acknowledging her work with physical and mentally challenged children, which it did. Ms. Ianessa thanked the club for the certificate.
ANNOUNCEMENT: Litto announced that his movie project in which he will need members to be extras would be delayed at month.
Vinnie Murdocco, a past member who was visiting from New York, reported that Past President Gary D’Allessandro who lives in Palm Springs said that as long as gas prices remain high he wouldn’t be around.
Loyacano announced that his daughter has the lead in “The Phantom of the Opera,” which is scheduled to open at the Venetian in Las Vegas on June 12 and runs indefinitely.
Frank Lonardo donated his $36 50/50 winnings back to the club.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. on June 3rd at Villa Sorrento followed by the June 17th meeting.
