GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of Mar. 5, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Vice-Pres. Steve Loyacano filling in for the absented Pres. Vinny Raso, who was being honored today as the employee of the year by Sodexho Food Co., led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill and those in the services. Loyacano lauded Brother Frank Valentino who has been “out of the weather,” for his attendance today. Valentino received a big hand.
Duke Sella motioned to accept the Feb. 19th minutes. Jimmy D’Arrigo seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case).
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report. Incomes from Feb. 19th meeting were Luncheon, $208, and non-eaters, $24 for a total of $232. Luncheon expenses were $300 and gratuities, $21 for a loss of $89. Other incomes were 50/50, $22; Vito Giovannelli’s 50/50 winnings, $23, and Dues, $70. The balance is $3122.04. Chris Lanieri motioned to accept. Roland Barbera seconded it. The motion carried.
The treasurer reminded all that he needs to know how many members and their guests are coming to the March 19th meeting and the St. Joseph’s Celebration at Dr. Joseph Turcillo’s house in Malibu. He stressed that an accurate count is needed to order the food and urged members to call him. Sec. Bill Poleri said that the treasurer’s phone number and directions are on the recently mailed postcard and letters.
di Milo praised John Occhiuto and Gary (Palmquist) Cannella for their large donations toward Sal Pacino’s funeral wreath. They also received a big hand.
The treasurer reminded all that the $35 DUES ARE NOW DUE and the dues go from October to October, not the last month a member paid them. Make Your Check Payable to G.O.I.I.A.
OLD BUSINESS: Vice-Pres. Loyacano read the letter he has written to be sent to the Daily News against the concerted effort to get rid of religious symbols and erase religion from the U.S. The removal of the cross, which is as much as an historical symbol as well as a religious one, is a good example of the ACLU action, he said. Turcillo voiced his support for the VP’s action. He blamed us for not taking action against ACLU for its anti-religion actions. He added that the ACLU is an organization gone crazy. Carmine Marinelli told of how the ACLU was against the veteran monument in La Jolla because of a cross. Duke Sella also spoke against the ACLU saying we have to fight back. Loyacano was cheered for his effort.
Vice Pres. Loyacano adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on Mar. 19th at Dr. Turcillo’s home in Malibu followed by the April 2th meeting at the Villa Sorrento.
