Minutes of June 6, 2009 Meeting
Pres. Vinnie Corbo called the meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. He then led the group in prayer. Pres. Corbo called for a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, Frank Monteleone and Frank (Cheech) La Marca; our servicemen, and Sam Butera, the former saxophone player for Louis Prima.
Frank Foti motioned to accept June 16th minutes. Ronnie La Barbera seconded it. The motion passed. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Poleri said there is no July 4th meeting.
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the June 16th meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 33; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $462; 1 comp, $14; 50/50 income, $42; Carmine Marinelli donated his 50/50 winnings, $43; Man-of-the-Year reservations, $490; Misc. MOTY Income, $35, and Dues, $35. Expenses: Shut In Seniors Luncheon/Gifts, 105.04, and 50/50 Tickets, 9.06. The balance is $617.10. (Note: Revised cost of the Seniors Luncheon: $657.99). Jim Valentine motioned to accept. John Murgo seconded it. The motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS: Chairman Murgo reported that he ordered a room for 125 people for the Man-of-the-Year dinner and so far 96 reservations have been made. He urged members to get their money in soon. The dinner will be on June 28 at Maggiano’s, Woodland Hills, from 5 to 10 p.m. The price is $35 per person and a table for eight or ten can be reserved. Dax Litto suggested we send out larger reminder to events and meetings. Poleri said that letters announcing the dinner were sent out and it was listed on the past three or four postcards.
Joe Civitate expressed thanks and appreciation for the work the guys did to help get Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich elected City Attorney. He said the group was so supporting and accommodating to Nuch and Civitate believed this got Nuch elected. Treas. di Milo suggested we send Trutanich a card congratulating him. Civitate said we should invite him and D. A. Steve Cooley back. Civitate also thanked all for the fine reception and support they gave his brother, Carmen, who discussed his book, "In the Name of the Father and Son," at the last meeting.
Pres. Corbo said he would have a light to control the speaker’s time in the future. The light would warn the speaker when he is approaching his ten-minute limit.
NEW BUSINESS: The president asked Brother Michael Federico to speak on "Dual Citizenship" being offered by Italy to Italian-American citizens. Federico said he is in the progress of filing and wasn’t an expert on it. John Antonucci suggested that we discuss it when Carmine Marinelli is here since he has done it.
ANNOUNCMENS: Corbo said that the Italian Hall at Pico House is holding a Taste of Italy on Saturday, June 27 from 5 to 9 p.m. There’s a $25 donation per person. For info call (213) 485-8432 or www.italianhall.org
Murgo said that a play about two Italian-American families written by Joe DiPietro is at the Lonny Chapman Repertory Theatre now through June 27 on Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and on Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20. Senior and student tickets are $17. Murgo hoped to get a group rate and passed a sign up list around.
Corbo announced that Brothers Ian Castelucci and Anthony Napoli are in the hauling, moving, transportation and storage business. Corbo said he used them to move his office furniture to a new location and has only praises for their work. Their firm name is "Angel City Hauling" with the motto of "U Call We Haul."
Sec. Poleri spoke to the club about Inter Milan vs Chelsea Game this summer, suggesting that those that are interested in soccer can go to it in July on a group rate. There were no takers.
Mauro Sardi donated his 50/50 winnings of $30 back to the club.
Pres. Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be June 20th at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the July 18th meeting. There is no meeting on July 4th. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
