GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of June 20, 2009 Meeting
Pres. Vinnie Corbo called the meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo led the group in prayer. Pres. Corbo called for a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, and our servicemen.
Sec. Bill Poleri reported an error on both the minutes and financial report. Both should read May 16th meeting and not June 16th. Rocco Telese motioned to accept June 6th minutes. Ronnie La Barbera seconded it. The motion passed. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Poleri announced that there are a few errors in the latest directory. (Corrections and updates are posted below.)
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the June 6th meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 31; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $434; 50/50 income, $30; Mauro Sardi donated his 50/50 winnings, $30; Dues, $87.50, and Man-of-the-Year reservations, $595. Expenses: Postage, $133.71; Printing, $73.07, and Misc. $40. The balance is $6072.90. Ronnie La Berbera motioned to accept. Vito Campanelli seconded it. The motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS: Chairman John Murgo said that there are 96 reservations for the Man-of-the-Year dinner. He urged members to get their reservations in now. So far he has an order in for 125 people and if he has to change it to 100 the space would be smaller giving us a crowded feeling. Joe Civitate said to put him down for a table. John Antonucci suggested we called those who haven’t made their reservations yet. Murgo replied that everyone was informed by mail.
Sec. Poleri reported that Tonia Caruso donated four tickets to the Man-of-the-Year Dinner in memory of her late husband and fellow brother, Anthony Caruso.
Treas. di Milo asked about the card the club plans to send Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich, congratulating him on being elected city attorney. Pres. Corbo said a card would be sent from the club.
Pres. Corbo tabled the discussion on "Dual Citizenship" being offered by Italy to Italian-American citizens until a future meeting due to a heavy speaking program.
Poleri reminded all there would be no meeting on July 4th.
NEW BUSINESS: The president said everyone who comes to the meeting must pay for his lunch as they enter. Those who have special situations should see himself, Poleri or di Milo. "When you walk through the door, you pay or you have a special condition. The treasurer shouldn’t have to ask you for money," he stressed.
SPECIAL PROJECT: Pres. Corbo asked Ty Ritter to say a few words about his organization. "Project Child Save," which rescues stolen children, who are taken to other countries for sexual purposes. He spoke of cases. One was a girl he brought out of Saudi Arabia and another involved nine kids out of Brazil. Ritter pointed out that the money the group received goes to getting the children out of foreign countries. "No money is spent on extra," he emphasized. "Trafficking in people is profitable. Most nations do nothing about it." Sec. Poleri suggested that the Board of Directors meet later in order to make a donation to the organization, adding anyone else who wants to make a contribution can do so after the meeting. Its’ web site is www.projectchildsave.org
SPEAKER PROGRAM: Corbo turned the meeting over to Vice Pres. Vinny Oliver, who introduced the scheduled speaker, former FBI Agent Charles Teevan, who is a former Marine who served in Vietnam. Teevan said he was impressed with what we did for Carmen "Nuch" Trutanich. Teevan attended the meeting when Trutanich spoke. The former agent said he now works on bankruptcy fraud in connection with the Ventura County Sheriff Department. Teevan, whose talk was humorous, factual and informative, gave summaries of cases he worked on. He was in on the Strawman Squad and other cases dealing with organized crime. He spoke about the Kansas City family, which was also connected to the Chicago and Cleveland families. The Strawman case involved Las Vegas Casinos (The movie "Casino" was about this case). The end results of the FBI work were successful for the government, he concluded.
ANNOUNCMENS: Charlie Gallo announced that a brief presentation on a business opportunity will be held at his house, 4401 Winnetka Ave., Woodland Hills, on Monday, June 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. He explained that the plan has been endorsed by Donald Trump and can be a great opportunity. RSVP: (818) 451-8883.
Vincent Dino donated his 50/50 winnings of $50 to the Project Child Save.
Pres. Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be July 18th at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Aug. 1st meeting. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
P.S. The Board of Directors met after the meeting and donated $100 from the club along with individuals’ donations for a total of $220.
