GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of June 4, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Frank Valentino and Mickey Grasso and those in the services.
John Murgo motioned to accept the May 21th minutes. Vinny Oliver seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Bill Poleri reminded members that there would be no meeting on July 2nd due to the holiday.
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report. Incomes from May 21st meeting were the Luncheon, $260 and non-eaters, $24. Luncheon expenses were $300 and gratuities, $24 for a loss of $40. Other incomes were 50/50, $30; donation, $25, and Dues, $35. The balance is $2624.22. Jimmy D’Arrigo motioned to accept. Duke Sella seconded it. The motion carried.
Treas. di Milo again reported that the Man-of-the-Year Dinner is to be at Bocca Trattoria, 3821 Riverside Drive, Burbank, on a Sunday afternoon either in late June or late July. He said that member Vito Marinelli is no longer associated with the restaurant. The cost is $39.25 per person and it included a glass of wine, full meal, desert, gratuities and taxes. There will be street parking.
OLD BUSINESS: Again there was a low turnout at the meeting, 25 to be exact, better than the last meeting. Mike Policare suggested having a meeting once a month. The idea didn’t go very far. Oliver suggested an amnesty program, like having a free lunch meeting. Poleri said it wouldn’t work. Rocky Vitalia said members have to be committed and want to show up. Murgo said it isn’t a question of making them attend because there are “stay” people and unlike doers they do nothing. Leo Matranga yelled call them up. Vice Pres. Steve Loyacano said he’d never seen an organization with problems with members not showing up. He said Poleri should know who comes to the meeting regularly and three of us could form a phone tree to call those who don’t attend. Loyacano put his suggestion into a motion that a phone tree committee be formed for calling members who don’t attend meetings and the list be composed by Sec. Poleri. Chicky Russo seconded it. The motion passed. Poleri asked for phone tree volunteers. Loyacano, Matranga, D’Arrigo and Vitalia all stepped forward.
NEW BUSINESS: Policare asked the two new young members, Anthony Napoli and Jerald Tassone, what they think. Napoli said it’s good that the club wants to hear what every person thinks. Tassone jokingly said he wanted a free lunch, at which time, Greg Holzer yelled out, “we need strippers.”
Pres. Raso said he wanted to see the club participate in community events like taking part in a parade. He elaborated, saying that we could be on a float and his wife, Karen could make us shirts. His point was that we need publicity to bring in members. Vitalia agreed with Raso calling it a good idea. He proudly added that his cousin, Don Novello played Father Sanducci.
di Milo pointed out that the election is in October and we need young blood, so if anyone is interested in being treasurer he would train him. Poleri called out – the same goes for the secretary post.
Holzer asked about the luncheon for the seniors. Chairman Policare said the hall is being renovated and D’Arrigo was to check on it. D’Arrigo said that the renovation would last into the fall but he thinks we can get the cafeteria. He will check on it and get back to the club. Policare then explained to the new members that we hold a luncheon for senior shut-ins. It was a very rewarding event for the members who took part in it, he added.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on June 18th at Villa Sorrento followed by the July 16th meeting.
