GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA

Minutes of June 28, 2008 Meeting

Vice President Vinnie Corbo called the meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo led the group in the prayer. Corbo announced that Brother Steve Lord’s son-in-law committed suicide and then led us in a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, and our servicemen.

D’Arrigo motioned to accept the June 7th minutes. Vinny Oliver seconded it. The motion passed. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Bill Poleri reminded the club that there would be no meeting on July 5 due to the holiday. He said that the June 21st meeting was changed to this week because the restaurant held a blood drive last Saturday.

Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the June 7th meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 25; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $350. Incomes were 50/50, $29, and Dues, $51. Expenses were Postage, $59.40, and L’Italo Americano Paper for Two Years, $70.The balance is $3244.29. Mike An’gileo motioned to accept. John Murgo seconded it. The motion passed.

OLD BUSINESS: Veep Corbo thanked Leo Matranga for bringing flowers, Murgo for the food he cooked and Chairman D’Arrigo and all his volunteers for making the senior shut-ins luncheon a big success. He said it was a great, warm and wonderful day for members as well as the seniors. di Milo added that this was the only time many of the guests got out of the nursing home. It was pointed out that we need to call in advance how many are in wheelchairs so we can have special wheelchair vans pick them up. Matranga added that we have to find out if the area has such vans. Corbo concluded that there are pictures of the event on the web site.

Murgo reported that a new Italian-American play, “The Basement” by Darrell Fusaro, which the club was planning to go to as a group was canceled.

SPEAKER: Dr. Joseph Turcillo, MD. FACP, spoke more on his previous theme: “To Preserve Your Organ Reserves.” He said that you need a good doctor, one who gets interested in you. Socialize medicine doesn’t produce good doctors. Politics are part of medicine. You should also have a pneumonia shot and hepatitis B shot. He reiterated having your teeth cleaned to prevent bacteria forming around your gums. The bacteria can lead to the heart. The three things one needs for good health are a good doctor, exercise and sexual intercourse.

NEW BUSINESS: Veep Corbo reported that he redid the web site and urged members to check it out. He is doing a video clip with Brother Larry Ottina, an artist, about the club. Vito Giovannelli said we should show our appreciation by giving Corbo a big hand. Corbo said that Lee Pappas deserved as much credit since he did half the work on the site. A big hand was given to both computer wizards.

Corbo announced that committees are being formed and members need to get involved. Some of the panels needing volunteers are San Gennero Festival, Picnic, Nomination and Handicapped Children Christmas Party.

Lenny Indelicato suggested that we go on a three-day cruise as a group. He was asked to look into it.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Richard Muccillo said that Brother Michael Perrotta is looking for a used car. If any member has a car they want to get rid of contact Mike.

Vice Pres Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Aug. 2nd at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Aug. 16th meeting. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
