GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of June 18, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Frank Valentino and Mickey Grasso and those in the services.
Sec. Bill Poleri corrected the minutes. Father Sanducci was supposed to read Father Sarducci. Vito Giovannelli motioned to accept the June 4th minutes. John Murgo seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Bill Poleri again reminded members that there would be no meeting on July 2. The next meeting is July 16.
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report. Incomes from June 4th meeting were the Luncheon, $286 and non-eaters, $12. Luncheon expenses were $300 and gratuities, $24 for a loss of $26. Other incomes were 50/50, $20; donation, $25, and Dues, $90. The balance is $2706.22. Nick Oliver motioned to accept. Chicky Russo seconded it. The motion carried.
He announced that the picnic would be on Oct. 23 at Crestwood Hill Park, Brentwood.
Treas. di Milo reported that there are only 22 reservations for the Man-of-the-Year Dinner, which is set for Sunday, June 26, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., at Bocca Trattoria, 3821 Riverside Drive, Burbank. The cost is $39.25 per person. He said he expects another 20 people. He stressed that MOTY dinner is the most important event of the club and urged members to bring guests .He added that he would trust anyone to pay at the door although he would rather they do so earlier. He said he called members and several had changed their numbers. He urged members to inform the club about number changes so we can call them.
He also announced that the picnic would be on Oct. 23 at Crestwood Hill Park, Brentwood.
OLD BUSINESS: Murgo said the club can’t continue to subsidize the meetings and motioned that we hold meetings once a month during the summer because there was another low turnout. He specified between now and the end of September. Rocky Vitalia seconded it. Poleri said that we have only one meeting in July, two in August and only one in September because of Labor Day. Sec. Steve Loyacano felt that this is a very dangerous thing to do. He said people get in the habit of doing things and if you break that habit, they might not come back. Murgo rescinded his motion. Vitalia rescinded his second.
Vitalia, a newcomer, asked what do we use the money for? He felt that there was enough in the treasury to pay for the lunches. Pres. Raso answered that we give money to charity, mainly to keep the government from taxing us. Vitalia then asked if we could reduce the amount we give to charity. Treas. di Milo explained to him and the other newcomers that we support several charities, including a Christmas Party for handicapped kids, a lunch for elderly shut ins and a donation to the Cooley’s Foundation which does research on Mediterranean anemia (Thalassemia), which affects people from the Mediterranean area. Poleri added he is a carrier as are his children.
Leo Matranga said we should have a full house and it’s about time we find out why they don’t come. Poleri said that a phone tree committee has been formed and a list of the names and phone numbers of those who don’t attend was given to the committee. He urged the club to give the panel time to work. Loyacano, chairman of the phone tree, said it took three guys to convince him to join, adding that we must keep after potential members to join. di Milo emphasized “if you love the club, you’ll show up.” Vitalia suggested we reorganize the meetings and the club. Sec. Poleri released some steam and pointed out that the reason the club was formed was to recreate the old time Italians when they got together all talking at once, arguing among each other, joking around and having fun but always loving each other as a brother. He added he didn’t want to see the club become so regimented like other groups that all the fun is taken out of it. In fact, he said, he would leave if that happens. Pres. Raso explained that the treasurer and secretary do a lot of work for the club. Vitalia asked why not have younger members help them out? He said he is willing to do Poleri’s job if he teaches me how.
NEW BUSINESS: Jimmy D’Arrigo, a member of the shut in luncheon committee, announced that they were able to obtain another room for the event and it will be held on Aug. 13.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on July 16th at Villa Sorrento followed by the Aug. 6th meeting.
