GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of June 16, 2007 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order and Vice Pres. Vinnie Corbo led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance and in the prayer. Veep Corbo called for a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill and our servicemen.
Rocco Telese motioned to accept the June 2nd minutes. Nick Oliver seconded it. The club's web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case).
Sec. Bill Poleri reminded members there would be no meeting for five weeks due to the July 4th holiday. The next meeting will be July 21.
The secretary also asked members to tell him of any errors or changes in the new phone directory.
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the June 2nd meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 23; Vitello's Luncheon Tab, $322; 50/50 income, $32; Vern Van Hecke donated $20 of his 50/50 winnings in honor of Chickey Russo, and Small Pins, $10. Expenses: Postage, 60.30. The balance is $2877. Vinny Oliver motioned to accept. Carmine Marinelli seconded it. The motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS: Treas. di Milo announced that the date for the Man-of-the-Year Dinner would be Sunday, Aug. 26th at Maggiano's Restaurant from 12 to 4 p.m. The cost is $30 per person. For reservations call di Milo at (818) 907-6777.
NEW BUSINESS: Joe Turcillo spoke of home for the poor run by nuns in Sylmar, which was the home of Al Capone. He said that the nuns can't afford to run its air conditioner and suggested that the club pay the monthly cost. Veep Raso said the club would look into it. Dr. Turcillo said that he would get more information. Holzer felt it was reasonable. Ronnie La Barbera asked if the nuns were Italian-Americans. The doctor said they were Mexician-Americans and he attends to them at the health clinic for the poor where he does volunteer work. Veep Corbo said that is another matter since we are an Italian American group. Turcillo felt we are an international and not a provincial group. The matter would be looked into, Corbo said.
Treas. di Milo suggested that we put on a show. He said that it would be a good way to raise money.
Sec. Poleri said that Brother Mike Perrotta recently had a fall knocking out several front teeth and he doesn't' have the money for bridgework. Poleri motioned that the club assist Perrotta in paying for the bridgework. Turcillo seconded the motion. Veep Corbo suggested that Perrotta check with MediCal and that he window shop for the best price. Poleri said that his motion is for only to assist him in the cost and not paying for all of it. The motion carried.
Telesse donated 50/50 winnings of $30 back to the club..
Veep Pres. Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be July 21St at Vitello's Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Aug. 4th meeting.
