GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA

Minutes of July 18, 2009 Meeting

 

Pres. Vinnie Corbo called the meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo led the group in prayer. Pres. Corbo called for a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, and our servicemen.

 

The minutes for June 20th were passed out. No vote was taken. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case).

 

Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the June 20th meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 35; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $450; 50/50 income, $50; Vincent Dino donated his 50/50 winnings to Project Child Save , $30; Dues, $17.50, and Man-of-the-Year reservations, $140. Expenses: Raffle Tickets, $9.06; Badge Holders, $21.92, and Donation to Project Child Save, $100. Man-of-the-Year Dinner Financial Summary: Incomes: Reservations Receipts, $3385.00; Door Receipts, $665.00; Donations, $414.50 for a total of $4464.50 and Six Comps, $210.00; Expenses: Total Restaurant Cost: $4002.13 (Besides the food, this included: Drop Down Screen, $50; Cash Bar Bartender, $75; Service Charges, $602.66, and Taxes, $311.05; Gifts for the Ladies, $43.70; Labels, $30.58, and Printing of Names, $32.52. Club profit was $355.57. The balance is $3562.41.Greg Holzer motioned to accept. Frank DeSantis seconded it. The motion carried.

 

OLD BUSINESS: None.

 

Pres. Corbo received a big hand for being named Man-of-the-Year.

 

NEW BUSINESS: Pres. Corbo announced that the Feast of San Gennaro is Sept. 24-27. Corbo said that G.O.I.I.A. will have a booth which is free because the club is a nonprofit organization and not selling any thing. As a good will gesture, the club donated $200 to the festival. He asked for volunteers to help man the booth.

 

A T-Shirt donated to club by Brother John Antonucci sold at an auction for $2. Holzer generously paid $5.

 

Brother DeSantis, a reporter for the Italo-Americano newspaper, handed out copies of the paper which has an article with pictures on the club’s Man-of-the-Year dinner. DeSantis made a pitch to the members to subscribe to the club. DeSantis was given an overwhelming applause.

 

Pres. Corbo discussed the club putting a weekly ad in Italo-Americano about the club. No decision was reached.

 

SPEAKER: Brother Dr. Joe Turcillo gave a very interesting and informative talk on health covering many issues from a health plan, use of proper head wear, good sun glasses and especially exercises building muscle strength, eliminating fractures, etc. He also discussed diabetes and talked about his St. Joseph Hospital’s employment of 45 years and of his many years with City of Hope Hospital. The doctor invited members to have the bottom of their feet checked for circulation. Many members took him up.

 

After the talk, the doctor invited the club to hold its luncheon meeting at his house in Malibu on Mar. 19, 2010, at a very important date in is life. He also stressed the importance of G.O.I.I.A. to donate to City of Hope.

 

ANNOUNCMENS: Vice Pres. Vinny Oliver announced former Marine Major Charles Lynn Lowder will address the club at the Aug.1st meeting. The major, who received many medals, will speak on his life in the Marines. Oliver guarantees that "you’re going to enjoy this speaker."

 

Vito Giovannelli, owner of the Casa de Pizza, announced he is having a Blues Night at the Sinatra Room in his restaurant. He said that there were just a few tables available and reservations are a must.

 

Pres. Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Aug. 1st at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Aug. 15th meeting. Recorded by Jimmy D’Arrigo. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
