GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of July 16, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Frank Valentino and Mickey Grasso, who is back in the hospital and those in the services.
Vinny Oliver motioned to accept the June 18th minutes. Frank Pacelli seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case).
Sec. Bill Poleri read a Thank You card from Frank Valentino, thanking the club for rewarding him the man of the year medal. Pres. Raso thanked the Man-of-the-Year Committee for bestowing the honor on Valentino, who merits the honor.
Poleri also announced the Honorable Mention award the club received on July 4th for its float in the ninth annual Channel Islands Fourth of July Parade. The float was the brainchild of Pres. Raso and his wife, Karen, who decorated themselves and their car in the red white and blue. The car also had red, white and green signs on each side reading Grandsons of Italy in American. The club also received an Award of Patriotism Certificate for being recognized as a Patriotic Parade Participant. Pres. Raso received a big hand from appreciative members. He said he hoped more members would have joined the parade but when they didn’t he concluded that the membership was either too old or too lazy to march. He added that he wanted to give the message to the outside that “we are family, just a good bunch of guys.”
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial reports for both the man-of-the-year dinner and the last meeting. Income from June 18th meeting was the Luncheon, $286. Luncheon expenses were $300 and gratuities, $22 for a loss of $36. Other incomes were 50/50, $22, and Dues, $10. Incomes from the MOYD were $1611.50, including contributions of $159.25. There were 45 in attendance. Expenses were Luncheon, $1754.88; cash tip, $50; four comps, $157, and medal, $292.23. Total cost to the club was $486.61. The balance is $2222.84. Mike Perrotta motioned to accept. Holzer seconded it. The motion carried.
OLD BUSINESS: Treas. di Milo reminded the club of the upcoming luncheon for the elderly shut-ins and that the event needs volunteers to pickup and/or accompany the seniors. Chairman Mike Policare said that the volunteers would have to pay for their own luncheons. The club would pay for the guests. Many members spoke about how rewarding it was for them at last year’s luncheon. Steve Lord said that he was surprised how alert and knowledgeable the woman he drove was although she was in her nineties. Leo Matranga, who came up with the idea, repeated the purpose of the affair, which is to give lunch to persons who don’t get out. Chairman Policare expected to have about 25 seniors.
Vice Pres. Loyacano reported that the telephone tree he headed isn’t working as far as getting members to attend. He asked if he could seek new members from other clubs that he belongs to. Pres. Raso said gave him the go ahead with a simple “you sure can.”
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on Aug 6th at Villa Sorrento followed by the Aug. 20th meeting.
