GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA

Minutes of Aug. 15, 2009 Meeting

Pres. Vinnie Corbo called the meeting to order and led the club in the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Jimmy D’Arrigo led the group in prayer. Pres. Corbo called for a moment of silence for our deceased brothers, those that are ill, especially Sal Sportelli, and our servicemen. Brother Sportelli’s condition is very serious and he is currently at Brotman Medical Center, 3828 Delmas Ter., Culver City CA, 90078. He is in room 316A and his phone number is (310) 836-7000 ext. 7316.

Sec. Bill Poleri reported that there were two spelling errors in the Aug. 1st minutes. In paragraph nine, dishonest should be dishonor and in paragraph 12 brought should be bought. Michael Federico accepted the corrected minutes. Nick Oliver seconded it. The motion passed. The club’s web site is www.goiia.com (case sensitive, all lower case). Sec. Poleri announced that there would be no meeting on Sept. 5 due to Labor Day weekend and the next meeting would be on Sept. 19.

Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report for the Aug. 1st meeting. Members attending the luncheon were 36; Vitello’s Luncheon Tab, $504; 50/50 income, $47; Al Miller donated his 50/50 winnings back to the club, $48; Dues, $70, and Misc. $5 from Auction. Expense was one comp luncheon, $14. The balance is $2542.41.Steve Lord motioned to accept. Anthony Santoro seconded it. The motion carried. Treas. di Milo announced that dues can be paid in advance. Dues are due in mid October.

OLD BUSINESS: Sec. Poleri presented Pres. Vinnie Corbo with a list of volunteers to man the club’s booth at the St. Gennero Festival Booth in September. Pres. Corbo wanted to know who passed the list around last week since he wasn’t here. Poleri explained that John Murgo made the announcement for volunteers, Poleri supplied the paper and John Oliva passed it around. Corbo thanked all those who were involved and asked if there is any one else who wants to volunteer to sign the list.

The president explained the festival opens Thursday evening, Sept. 24, and that night is when the big donors show up. It cost $100 to get in. GOIIA is allowed two passes which go to Murgo and Corbo who will set up the club’s booth that evening. It costs $5 to get in during the following three days, Sept. 25-27. Corbo stressed that every one would have to pay $5 even though he is volunteering to man our booth.

Steve Toby asked what furniture is needed and what can be done to shade the booth. Corbo said no furniture is needed and explained that booths are arranged in an east-west direction with the food selling booths on the south side and the nonfood booths on the north side, causing the latter to be in the direct ray of the sun as evening approaches. He added that there is no way to shade the booth. Joey Janiak asked if we could sell raffle tickets at the booth, holding the drawing the final night. Since we are a nonprofit organization, we cannot sell anything, Corbo explained, adding that we do offer rewards to anyone that donates to us.

Poleri asked if anyone would volunteer to help him to man the booth on Friday morning, since most members work during the weekday. John Antonucci volunteered.

NEW BUSINESS: Sec. Poleri asked about setting an election schedule. Corbo referred it to the board of directors. (The election period involves three meetings. The last meeting in September is for nominations, the first meeting in October is for campaigning and the second meeting in October, which is around Columbus Day, is for voting. The board met after the meeting and suggested to Sec. Poleri, who is in charge of the election, to delay the election one meeting since Poleri won’t be at the last meeting in September. Poleri agreed to it. The schedule is as follows: Nominations, Oct. 3; Campaigning, Oct. 17, and Voting, Nov. 7. Only members in good standing can vote which means your dues must be paid.)

SPEAKER PROGRAM: Ty Ritter of the "Project Child Save," updated the members on his group latest project of rescuing children kidnapped to other countries for sexual purposes. He explained that the kids are being held in southern Mexico and hopes to get them out of there in a few weeks, but the project costs money. Poleri suggested a hat be passed around. Corbo said the donations should come from the club as a whole since we are like a family and not from the individual. Several members made small donations to the organization.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Jimmy D’Arrigo announced that free prostate screening would be held at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Burbank, on Oct. 3. He urged all should take part in it.

Mardy De Santo donated his 50/50 winnings of $23 back to Project Child Save.

Pres. Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Sept. 19th at Vitello’s Restaurant at 11:30 a.m. followed by the Oct. 3rd meeting. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
