GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of April 2, 2005 Meeting
Sgt.-at-Arms Greg Holzer called the meeting to order. Pres. Vinny Raso led the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill and those in the services and for Pope John Paul II who died prior to the meeting.
Chris Lanieri motioned to accept the Mar. 5th minutes. Jimmy D’Arrigo seconded it. The motion carried. There was no meeting on March 19 because at the St. Joseph’s Celebration at Dr. Joseph Turcillo’s house it was decided by the board to table the meeting to April 2 due to the good time the membership was having. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case).
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report. Incomes from Mar. 5th meeting were Luncheon, $338, and non-eaters, $18 for a total of $356. Luncheon expenses were $301 and gratuities, $29 for a gain of $26. Other incomes were 50/50, $30, and Dues, $175. St. Joseph’s Celebration Expenses were Priest Honorarium, $50; Waitress, $60, and Postage/Envelopes, $82.30. Donations for the celebration totaled $100 and for the waitress, $20. Also, 50/50 brought in $32. The balance is $3352.30. Roland Barbera motioned to accept. Greg Holzer seconded it. The motion carried.
The treasurer thanked Dr. Turcillo for hosting the celebration and Vito Mariano for catering the event.
The treasurer reminded all that the $35 DUES ARE NOW DUE and the dues go from October to October, not the last month a member paid them. Make Your Check Payable to G.O.I.I.A.
OLD BUSINESS: Vice-Pres. Loyacano also thanked Turcillo and Mariano for the great event and then he updated everyone on the letter he wrote and sent to the Daily News. The letter protests the purging of religious symbols from our culture by the ACLU. He reported that the Daily News hasn’t run the letter but hasn’t informed him of not running it. Since the News has published other writings of his, he expected the common courtesy of them telling him they aren’t going to run the letter. He called it “a moral sin for not informing him.” He added that he spoke to a person on the newspaper staff who hinted that the publisher is afraid of the ACLU.
NEW BUSINESS: Commenting on the small turn out, Dax Litto said that he car pooled to the meeting and that he and others will call on members if they need a ride to the next meeting. Sec. Poleri asked if anyone lives in or near Culver City since there is a member with bad eyesight who needs a ride to the meeting. There was no response.
A call came on Poleri’s cell phone and it was for the members. The secretary gave the phone to Pres. Raso who announced it was from past president, Joe Picarella who now lives in the state of Washington. Raso passed on to the guys Picarella’s greetings to all.
The president asked the members to keep Frankie Valentino who is fighting cancer in their thoughts.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on April 16th at Villa Sorrento followed by the May 7th meeting.
