GRANDSONS OF ITALY IN AMERICA
Minutes of April 16, Meeting
Pres. Vinny Raso called the meeting to order. Pres. Raso invited Past President Gary D’Allessandro to lead the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. A moment of silence followed for our deceased brothers, those that are ill and those in the services.
Chicky Russo motioned to accept the Apr. 2nd minutes. Vinny Oliver seconded it. The motion carried. The club’s web sight is: http://leejpappas.com/goiia.htm (case sensitive, all lower case).
Treas. Tony di Milo read the financial report. Incomes from Apr. 2nd meeting were Luncheon, $260, and non-eaters, $12 for a total of $272. Luncheon expenses were $300 and gratuities, $23 for a loss of $51. Other incomes were 50/50, $27, and Dues, $105. The balance is $3387.74. Carmine Marinelli motioned to accept. Jimmy D’Arrigo seconded it. The motion carried.
Treas. di Milo reported that he is negotiating with Bocca Trattoria for the Man-of-the-Year Dinner.
NEW BUSINESS: Mike Policare questioned the treasurer about the length of time the club is carrying dues delinquent members. John Murgo mildly suggested “throwing them out of the club.” Vice-Pres. Steve Loyacano proposed sending them letters. Sec. Bill Poleri quickly jumped on that idea, saying that Treas. di Milo has called everyone who is behind in his dues. Policare emphasized “enough is enough.” When asked about those who are having financial trouble paying their dues, di Milo said that those members’ dues are being waved. di Milo said he would call the delinquents again, giving them until the end of the month to have their dues paid. Policare suggested that di Milo tell them that it’s the membership who is pushing to have every member’s dues brought up to date.
Mike Vanoff wondered about the club going on Google, using Italian as a search word. He said Los Angeles used to have an Italian section downtown. It doesn’t now. He said that he was up in San Francisco’s North Beach and it was like being in Little Italy, which is also slowly disappearing. He added that Buffalo used to have an Italian section. He talked about our grandparents when they came here and had their special groups. Vanoff then suggested that we have a web sight with our grandfathers’ pictures in it that the public would have access to. Vinny Oliver wondered why we don’t have access to the club’s present sight. Sec. Poleri explained in a non-dramatic way that every member has access and the code to the club’s sight is always listed on all postcards and minutes. The reason for only having members able to access it is to protect those members who don’t want their home or email addresses available to the public. Policare said he likes the idea of using our grandfathers’ pictures. D’Allessandro suggested that Vanoff take on this project. Loyacano said we would need a special web sight for non-members. Sec. Poleri told Vanoff to call Lee Pappas who handles our web sight.
OLD BUSINESS: Joe Turcillo brought up the subject of publicity. He said we aren’t recognizable. We should take part in parades and events showing that we aren’t bad guys. Vito Givoannelli concurred saying that the club should buy lunch for whomever participates.
Vanoff donated his 50/50 winnings of $26 to the club.
Pres. Raso adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be at 12:30 a.m. on May 7th at Villa Sorrento followed by the May 21st meeting. Submitted by Sec. Bill Poleri
