OLD BUSINESS: Vincent Manfre asked if he could bring his son to the Man-of-the-Year dinner. Chairman John Murgo said a member could bring as many guests as he wants. He added that a table of eight or ten could be reserved. Murgo urged everyone to get their reservations in early since there is seating for only 125 people. The event will be on Sunday, June 28 at Maggiano’s, Woodland Hills, from 5 to10 p.m. The price will be $35 per person and a table for eight or ten can be reserved
Pres. Corbo praised Murgo for attending the meeting having just had surgery on his back. Corbo said "he has a hole in his back and it was an effort to get here." Visiting Joe Picarella called for a big hand for Murgo, which he received.
The president warned those unpaid members to pay their dues or be "Gone!" The club wants to finalize its badge list and update the directory.
He also reminded all that the next meeting would be at Casa De Pizza. The directions are in the minutes. Sec. Bill Poleri added that the directions would also be on the upcoming post card.
Corbo said volunteers are needed for the shut-in seniors’ luncheon. The event is on Saturday, May 9, at St. Charles Parish Center.
NEW BUSINESS: Corbo issued a strong recommendation, no, he issued an order for members to be more respectful of guests in the future. He pointed out that the last meeting hosted a speaker (Joan Del Monte) and her guests (Tonia Caruso and Kathy Owens). "The membership showed no respect. They ate first. They let the women sit by themselves. They (guests) should be treated as royalty."
Vice Pres. Vinny Oliveri added that we plan to have high rank speakers in the future and it isn’t good to show disrespect. Manfre asked if we shouldn’t also show respect to our older members by letting them go first to get their food. Sec. Poleri responsed with "we are old enough, we don’t need to be reminded of our age."
Charlie Gallo asked if we couldn’t have members give a three-minute talk about themselves so we can get to know each other better. Murgo said we have done this in the past. Gallo said that guys from Buffalo get together often and they could give a short talk here. Corbo asked Gallo to let us know and we'll book them for a future meeting.
SPEAKER: Dr. Joseph Turcillo, MD. FACP, spoke on maintaining our organs reserve. He said the modeling
for aging is to postpone full expression of a disease so you can have a better life. He also said that the brain needs to be discussed.
GUEST: The president asked Past President Joe Picarella to say a few words about himself since he moved away. Corbo reminded all that Picarella is the gentleman who treats the membership to a free lunch at Christmas time every year.
Picarella said "I love to see the camaraderie here. It’s a good interaction. Good to be back with you guys." He spoke about his life in southeast Washington "where people are nice and go out of their way to help you. Everyone gets along." He added that he enjoyed retirement. "I’m loving it."
Accompanying Joe was his son Mike Picarella who is also a former member.
Larry Ottina donated his 50/50 winnings of $38 to the club.
ITALIAN WORD OR PHRASE: The Italian word for the day is "Scordit Lo ," which means, "Forget It," thanks to John Antonucci and Rocco Passanante.
Pres Corbo adjourned the meeting. The next meeting will be Apr. 18th at Casa De Pizza, 16161 San Fernando Mission Blvd. at the corner of Woodley Ave. at 11:30 a.m. followed by the May 2nd meeting back at Vitello’s Restaurant. Submitted by Secretary Bill Poleri.
